Book Fair at Queen's Park glasshouses

April 13, 2025

QPN are delighted to be hosting a Book Fair in the glasshouses in partnership with Friends of Queen's Park and a few of our brilliant local bookshops and booksellers, including Oxfam Books, Burning House Books and Merry-Go-Round children's books. We'll also have a book swap - so please bring a book you loved reading and now want to give to someone else to enjoy.

Queen's Park Neighbourhoods (QPN) brings together 18 local stakeholder organisations - over this past year we've worked together in consulting the local community on their views towards creating a Local Place Plan for the area (see www.qpn.org.uk). Local people have identified Queen's Park glasshouses as a place they especially value; a community asset they'd like to see better used in future with more activities and opportunities for local people to visit and enjoy.

Glasgow Building Preservation Trust (GBPT) is working with Glasgow City Council, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), Fiona Sinclair Architect, and Community Links Scotland to develop long-term plans for the Queen's Park glasshouses - building on the consultations already carried out with the local community. GBPT has huge experience of working with heritage assets across the City and a track record of success in forging exciting and sustainable new futures for great buildings requiring fresh investment and vision, such as the Kelvingrove Bandstand, West Boathouse, and Parkhead School.

It's easier to imagine transformational change with a building where it's open and already in use - partners, potential funders and local residents can more readily picture and support a new vision for a much-loved building where alternative uses can be demonstrated, tested and allowed to evolve. With this in mind, QPN is working closely with GBPT to host a pop-up Book Fair at the QP glasshouses on Sunday 13 April, 11am to 3pm. This event will seek to show how the space could potentially be used for other activities in the future and thereby to prompt local people to come forward with their ideas. Alongside a handful of table-top book stalls (showcasing independent local bookstores and secondhand book charities), GBPT will host a table to hear the views of the local community on how they'd like to see Queen's Park glasshouses being used in the future.
